Creating an Environmental Print Alphabet

My environmental print alphabet has always been one of my favorite classroom visual aids. It’s so engaging for students as they recognize many of the logos! I had many questions about my environmental print alphabet when I posted a photo on Instagram. I wanted to share how I made mine so that you can create your own for your classroom! Unfortunately I don’t have a complete copy of my alphabet available in my store because most of the images are trademarked, but I do have a blank template available here. It’s relatively easy to make your own and it’s much more fun because you can incorporate regional images that are relevant to your students! Follow the steps below to create an environmental print alphabet.

1. I recommend creating your alphabet in Microsoft PowerPoint. PowerPoint makes easy to copy, paste, and resize images. You can also easily duplicate pages to save time.

2. Next, choose a fun but simple border for your alphabet. The border below is the one included in my template on TeachersPayTeachers. Add a text box and type out the letters of the alphabet on each page. You can duplicate pages by right-clicking and then selecting “Duplicate Slide.” I recommend a clear and kid-friendly font. I personally like “Century Gothic.”

3. Now the fun part! Identify an image to match each letter. (I’m including a list of some possible letter ideas at the end of this post.) Choose icons, logos, or pictures that are relevant to your students. I found images by using Google image search.

4. Look for clear, crisp images that  will maintain image quality when the size is increased. Copy, paste, and resize the images in Microsoft PowerPoint.

5. After you’ve completed all of the letters, print, laminate and display your new alphabet in your classroom!

To get you started, here’s a few ideas for possible images for each letter.
